National Achievement Scholars

National Merit Scholars

Annually, over 1.4 million students take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/MNSQT) in October and are entered into the National Merit Program, a nationwide competition for recognition and awards conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Each April, the 50,000 highest scorers are offered the College Plans Reporting Service through their schools. Some 16,000 of those high performers are designated Semifinalists on a state representational basis. Only Semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the Merit Scholarship competition and advance to Finalist standing by meeting a number of additional requirements.
The other 34,000 high performers are named Commended Students on the basis of a national Selection Index score of 200, applicable to all program participants without regard to state-by-state distribution. Participants who scored at or above the commended level, but below their state or selection unit’s Semifinalist qualifying score, are Commended Students. These are truly scholastically talented students.

National Achievement Scholars

In 1964, the National Achievement Scholarship program was initiated to recognize outstanding achievement among Black American high school students. Beginning with the publishing of test scores, the process for selecting winners of the National Achievement Scholarship works much the same way as the selection process for the National Merit Program.
